Voters in Dade County (Miami) Florida will get a second chance on Jan. 29th to vote on whether three parimutuels -- the Calder horse racetrack, Flagler dog track, and Miami Jai-Alai -- should be allowed to install slot machines like those operating at three racinos in neighboring Broward County.
While voters in Dade County rejected slots in 2005, the year they were approved by voters in Broward, Florida law allows those favoring slots to put the issue back on the ballot for another vote after two years.
A study released in October by Washington Economics Group projected that new racinos would create almost 6,500 new jobs at an average salary of almost $40,000 per year in their first full year of operation. The study said they also would generate $210 million in new state revenues an $26 million to local governments.
However, Broward's racinos are generating a lot less money for state and local governments than initially projected.
