Voters in Dade County (Miami) Florida on Jan. 29th voted to authorize three parimutuels -- the Calder horse racetrack, Flagler dog track, and Miami Jai-Alai -- to install Class III slot machines like those operating at three racinos in neighboring Broward County.
While voters in Dade County rejected slots in 2005, the year they were approved by voters in Broward, the issue was placed back on the 2008 ballot and this time voters overwhelmingly approved the racinos.
While it probably will be months before the Dade parimutuels will be able to get slots in operation, the Seminole Tribe put 800 Class III slots into operation at its Hard Rock Casino in Hollywood, Florida, the day before the vote and it probably will have Class III slots in operation at several other casinos in a matter of weeks.
The very strong vote for slots in Dade County -- which came despite a multi-million dollar campaign urging residents to vote 'No" -- suggests that opposition to gaming ils eroding rapidly in South Florida, where gamers will soon be able to choose among 7 racinos and 8 Indian casinos.
